Transformational investment

Major sporting events and grassroots sport to receive £900 million funding

More than £900 million will be committed to major sporting events and grassroots sport across the UK in a “transformational investment” over the coming years, the Government has announced.

Euro 2028, the European Athletics Championships next year and the men’s and women’s Tour de France Grand Departs in 2027 are among the key events set to be hosted in the country that will benefit from more than half a billion pounds in funding.

It almost seems churlish to raise the issue, but presumably HS2 was supposed to be a "transformational investment" too. And Net Zero.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: “Sport tells our national story in a way few other things can, uniting communities, inspiring millions, and showcasing our nation on the global stage.

“This major backing for world-class events will drive economic growth across the country, delivering on our plan for change.

It's the way she tells 'em.

"Euro 2028": Ok, footer is popular so maybe you can buy votes with that.

"the European Athletics Championships": nobody gives a button for athletics - few votes there.

"Tour de France Grand Departs" cycling as a spectator sport is a continental thing. I turned out to see a bit of the British leg of the Tour de France a few years ago and certainly wouldn't bother a second time. Dull as ditchwater.

Since I discovered that Rudakubana lad is a United supporter, I realised he's not so bad.

dearieme - yes, as a way to buy votes, it seems futile as people focus on the sport rather than the tediously dull minister trying to associate herself with it.

Sam - good point, ferociously professional sport is so inspiring.

Aye, ye cannae beat "funding".
Pollies always call money, dosh, spondulicks " funding"
It is free money. Nobody pays it, Nobody loses anything. Nothing ever gets paid back.
It is the politician's equivalent of a victimless crime.
However the private citizen can not pull this trick. Try going to your bank, neighbours or relatives and request that they give you " funding "

I agree, and it is a trick. "Money" would carry with it the idea of a certain amount of money, but "funding" tones down that idea and leaves open the possibility that more will be required later.

I'm 78 and it can take me almost a minute to hobble 100 yards, but I'm sure I can do it faster, so give me money, sorry, I mean funding.

Penseivat - that sounds rather grim at 78, I hope you get some assistance. A friend of Mrs H has mobility issues which came on quite quickly. A few years ago she could walk 10 miles, but now it looks as if she'll soon be in a wheelchair.
